Research summary

Canadians who are older than 65 years now outnumber those who are under 14 years. As our society continues to age, it is important that older adults can stay healthy and active for as long as possible. Using mouse models and human studies, Dr. Dawn Bowdish, Canada Research Chair in Aging and Immunity, is discovering the role of the microbiome and immune system in healthy aging.

She and her research team are testing new interventions, such as drugs and exercise, to learn more about when and how we can improve aging. Ultimately, they aim to develop knowledge that will help older adults enjoy more years of healthy, active and independent living.
