Research summary

Canada supports diversity in its military and is also interested in improving outcomes for its veterans. As Canada Research Chair in Social Innovation and Community Engagement, Dr. Maya Eichler is examining how gender norms, heteronormativity and racism play out in both the military and civilian sectors. She is also studying how social constructions of gender interact with race, ethnicity, sexuality or disability to shape outcomes for veterans.

Eichler and her research team are developing an intersectional feminist analysis of veteran policy, experiences and advocacy in Canada. They hope to offer a more complex understanding of how people transition from military to civilian life. They are also documenting examples of social innovation in military and veteran affairs and providing recommendations for better program design.
