Research involves

Applying new technologies to the discovery of catalytic chemical reactions and processes.

Research relevance

This research will boost the Canadian chemical industry’s competitiveness by developing sustainable methods to make a variety of products.

Research summary

Dr. Stephen Newman, Canada reseach Chair in Sustainable Catalysis, is interested in developing new chemical reactions and processes for the pharmaceutical, fine and bulk chemical industries. The goal is overcome the chemical industry’s reliance on crude oil using renewable starting materials, such as those derived from biomass feedstocks.

The Newman group is committed to improving the way that synthetic chemistry is practiced, from the blackboard to the bench to the manufacturing facility. Its research seeks to develop new tools for studying chemical reactions and prove that automation technology can be of immense value in synthetic chemistry. The team also aims to provide chemists with new transformations and mechanistic information to enhance the efficiency by which complex molecules are made.
