Research summary

Schizophrenia affects about 1% of Canadians and usually develops into a full-blown illness in late adolescence or early adulthood. This debilitating mental illness has no cure and it can be difficult to treat.

Dr. Aristotle Voineskos, Canada Research Chair in Neuroimaging of Schizophrenia and Associate Professor of Psychiatry, aims to change how we understand schizophrenia and test new treatment approaches. His research program uses advanced neuroimaging to identify factors that can moderate or influence functional outcomes in people with schizophrenia. By integrating brain function and behaviour, this research will lead to a new understanding of the disease, an essential step toward using neuroimaging to help break the treatment innovation barrier.
