Research summary

Digital platforms like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter change the ways in which we relate to each other. They also influence how we consume culture, especially during democratic elections and significant global events like the COVID-19 pandemic. As Canada Research Chair in Communication Policy and Governance, Dr. Sara Bannerman is examining the power relationships at play in these contexts.

She and her research team are examining the relationships between these platforms and states, where efforts to regulate-and traditional notions of sovereignty-are challenged. Their research is focusing on two interrelated themes: privacy and platform regulation.
