Developing sustainable approaches to designing and using nanomaterials.

Research relevance

This research will synthesize novel nanoscale materials for advanced molecular sensing using sustainable approaches.

Research summary

Material chemistry is the study of the chemical nature of the materials in the world around us-from the clothes we wear to new technologies used in sports, medicines and computing. As Canada Research Chair in Sustainable Chemistry and Materials, Dr. Christa Brosseau is applying sustainability concepts to materials chemistry over multiple length scales.

She and her research team are working to advance sustainable chemistry by exploring innovations in materials research across many length scales, from nano to macro and beyond. For example, at the nanoscale, they are questioning how nanomaterials-which bring about exciting new innovations, including personalized medicine-can be synthesized in more environmentally friendly ways. At the macroscale, they are studying how innovations in the mining sector can ensure that the chemical methods used to extract precious metals are environmentally friendly and cost-effective.
