Research involves

Using economic models and data to quantify how government spending on public goods and services affects economic outcomes.

Research relevance

The research will yield policy recommendations on how variations in government spending on public goods and services affects businesses, workers, contractors and the economy.

Research summary

How do government regulations-such as taxes and financial regulations, environmental protections or wage rules-affect markets, firms and workers? These are the questions that Dr. Decio Coviello is trying to answer as Canada Research Chair in Economics.

Coviello is developing a research program that builds on policy changes that lead to quasi-experimental variations in certain aspects of government regulations. He and his research team are using detailed datasets for the United States and Italy to quantify the impact that these policy changes have on economic factors associated with changes in human welfare. They aim to make recommendations to policy-makers in Canada and around the world.
