Research summary

Surgery is an important treatment option for patients with a wide range of acute and chronic health problems. But perioperative care—the steps taken just before, during and after surgery—plays a critical role in a patient’s health.

As Canada Research Chair in Perioperative Care, Dr. Philip James Devereaux is evaluating several ways to improve perioperative care. He and his research team are studying whether continuous remote automated monitoring (RAM) technology and molecular medicine can facilitate predictions, inform understandings, and identify preventive interventions. They are also evaluating the use of brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and serial cognitive testing after surgery to better understand and prevent postoperative covert (silent) stroke and cognitive decline. In addition, they are determining the feasibility and impact of a new interdisciplinary perioperative care service. Their research could substantially transform perioperative care by making surgery safer.
