Research summary

Intelligent energy systems can reduce carbon emissions by integrating different energy solutions and sources. As Canada Research Chair in Intelligent Energy Systems, Dr. Hao Liang aims to enhance the efficiency and resilience of smart energy systems with distributed energy resources (small electricity generators, such as rooftop solar panels) by making use of advanced information technology and computational tools.

He and his research team are developing advanced stochastic models (financial models used in investment decisions) and optimization strategies to support the operation and control of energy systems with cyber-physical resilience enhancement. They are also developing innovative tools based on deep reinforcement learning and quantum computing to address the high computational complexity of future energy systems that will use distributed energy resources. Ultimately, their work could lead to energy systems that are more efficient, reliable, secure and sustainable.
