Research summary

Some 2.2 billion people in the world lack access to safe drinking water. Another 3.5 billion don’t have safely managed sanitation systems. The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6), which focuses on access to clean water and sanitation, aims to change this. But we will need faster, more transformative change to stimulate enough progress to meet this goal. As Canada Research Chair in Hydrological Modelling, Dr. Tricia Stadnyk seeks to bring about meaningful action for SDG 6.

She and her research team are investing in innovative global environmental prediction tools, integrated cumulative effects assessments, and science-to-action initiatives. They are also using a unique scale-up-to-scale-down approach to facilitate an outcome-oriented, integrated, global prediction model that will support community-based and local water management decisions. Their research could galvanize Canada’s sustainable water policy.
