Research summary
Dr. Mouloud Boukala, Canada Research Chair in Media, Disabilities and (Self-)Representation, is seeking to better understand how a vulnerable group uses media. Through a collaborative approach—with, by and for individuals who self-identify as having a disability—Boukala and his team will shed light on the emergence and scope of media (self)representation of disabilities in Canada from 1980 to 2020. They will examine the ways in which contemporary (self-)representation of disabilities affects persons with disabilities and leverages their social recognition. They will also define measures that can improve how they are portrayed in Canadian media content.
