Research summary

Youth mental health and suicide are top research priorities in Canada. Suicide is the second most common cause of death among youth in our country, and an estimated 1.2 million young Canadians suffer from mental health disorders. Despite their devastating impacts, little progress has been made in understanding and treating suicidal behaviours and related mental disorders.

As Canada Research Chair in Youth Mental Health and Suicide Prevention, Dr. Marie-Claude Geoffroy aims to produce new information to help identify bio-psychosocial factors that lead to suicidal behaviors. She and her research team are also using large epidemiological samples and working with psychiatric patients to develop preventative strategies to improve the mental well-being of young people.
