Research summary

Senior citizens who live with a major neurocognitive disorder, like Alzheimer’s disease, often present with vocal, aggressive or apathetic behaviours—all signs of malaise. Dr. Anne Bourbonnais, Canada Research Chair in Elder Care, aims to enhance their well-being as well as that of the people who are close to them, including their caregivers.

Bourbonnais and her research team are taking an original approach to better understand the experiences of seniors with severe cognitive disorders. They are developing concrete approaches to delivering care that can be directly incorporated into practice, given that these are being designed in partnership with the individuals involved. Their work will help develop solid, relevant knowledge and will significantly influence clinical practice. The number of Canadians who experience cognitive disorders is expected to rise in the coming years. Bourbonnais’ work will directly improve their well-being and the quality of care they receive.
