Research Summary
The decarbonization of the electricity sector and the electrification of heating and transportation will be critical to achieving global climate targets. However, these efforts will also introduce considerable challenges. Dr. David P. Brown, Canada Research Chair in Energy Economics and Policy, is analyzing policies to alleviate barriers to the decarbonization and efficient operation of the electricity sector.
He and his research team are focusing on several areas, including how to increase consumer responsiveness to financial incentives to alter electricity consumption patterns, the design of deregulated electricity markets, competition policy, and the integration of emerging technologies, such as electric vehicles and batteries. Ultimately, their research could help Canada reduce its greenhouse emissions to 40% to 45% below 2005 levels by 2030 and achieve net-zero electricity generation.
