Research summary

Traumatic brain injuries and concussions are more common than breast cancer, HIV, spinal cord injury and multiple sclerosis combined. Yet our approaches to screen for and manage these injuries are not always accessible or relevant to marginalized populations.

Dr. Angela Colantonio, Canada Research Chair in Traumatic Brain Injury in Underserved Populations, is working to achieve equitable treatment for all persons who suffer traumatic brain injuries. Using gender-based analysis, she and her research team are working with persons who are exposed to partner violence, who interact with the justice system, or who experience housing instability. Ultimately, they are trying to make screening and management more relevant to them.
