Research summary
Many contemporary black artists, craftspeople, curators and critics in Canada have been historically erased from the “imaginary” of Canadian visual culture—our set of shared cultural values and meanings. As Canada Research Chair in Canadian Black Diasporic Cultural Production, Dr. Andrea Fatona will provide Canadians greater access to these works and artists.
By developing a dynamic online platform housing curatorial projects that are both by and about black Canadian producers, Fatona and her research team aim to expand our understanding of Canadian black contemporary cultural production from 1987 to the present. Ultimately, their research will raise awareness of the important role that black artists have played in the histories of the visual and media arts in Canada.
