Research summary

Amid a brewing global trade war, the international trading system has been plunged into turmoil. Multilateralism and the rules-based trading system, which have long been essential to ensuring stability and order in the global economy, are increasingly under threat.

Dr. Kristen Hopewell, Canada Research Chair in Global Policy, is analyzing critical contemporary changes in global trade politics and governance. She and her research team aim to better understand how states are responding to growing trade conflicts, both multilaterally and bilaterally. Their work will make an important contribution to global policy debates about free trade and the future of the trading system.
