Research summary

In today’s information society, people with communication disabilities face significant and often hidden barriers. To yield insights into these barriers, Dr. Joshua St. Pierre, Canada Research Chair in Critical Disability Studies, is developing an intersectional theory of communicative breakdown.

St. Pierre and his research team are delving into critical disability studies, contemporary political theory, feminist/queer theory, and speech-language pathology to take a new look at disabled communication as a generative force in our current information society. They plan to collaborate with international scholars, offer substantial opportunities for graduate student training, and translate interventions into clinical practices. They also hope to create resources for people with speech disabilities and inform accessibility practices at the individual and institutional levels.
