Research summary
Racial inequality continues to be a deeply rooted social problem in Canada. Dr. Debra Thompson, Canada Research Chair in Racial Inequality in Democratic Societies, is exploring racism and activism Canada and beyond.
Thompson and her research team are comparing the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movements in Canada, Great Britain, France and the United States. They are analyzing similarities and differences in the institutional targets of BLM activism, including police accountability, mass and uneven incarceration, racial profiling, access to citizenship, and racism in higher education. Ultimately, they will explore not only the relationship between racial inequality and democracy, but key tensions in global race politics: that is, between the local and the transnational, between legacy and innovation, and between global connection and rupture.
