Research summary
The coexistence of Canada’s two official languages has long been a dominant theme in Canadian history. Dr. Michelle Landry, Canada Research Chair in Francophone Minorities and Power, plans to shine a new light on collective mobilization and advance the rights and interests of francophone minorities.
She and her research team are also studying the groups that are working to oppose these rights and claims. By adopting a perspective based on social movement sociology, they want to understand mobilization strategies and interpretation frameworks for francophone minority advocacy groups. Landry and her team are also analyzing the movement and counter-movement dynamic that is emerging between those advocating for francophone rights and those taking an anti-bilingualism stance, as well as their influence in the political sphere. Their work will advance our understanding of the distribution of power between Canada’s official language groups.
