Research summary

Mobility limitations, such as difficulty walking or climbing stairs, can affect older adults with a range of chronic health conditions. Studies have shown that limited mobility is a strong predictor of negative health outcomes for people who are elderly, leading to falls, disability and death.

Dr. Marla Beauchamp, Canada Research Chair in Mobility, Aging and Chronic Disease, is developing strategies to keep older adults healthy, mobile and in their communities for as long as possible. She and her research team are focusing on two key areas: identifying mobility problems in older adults earlier, and developing personalized interventions to improve mobility later in life.
