Research summary

On account of the discrimination and stigmatization they face, sexually and gender diverse (SGD) individuals can face a range of social problems, including substance use.

Dr. Jorge Flores-Aranda, Canada Research Chair in Sexually and Gender Diverse Individuals and their Psychoactive Substance Use Trajectories, seeks to understand the interrelations between these trajectories and the various oppressive factors that confront SGD individuals. Flores-Aranda and his team are using a community-based research approach that will help deliver practical results and respond to needs in the field. Their work will help develop and evaluate the implementation and effects of innovative actions-some of them online-based on an anti-oppressive, harm-reduction approach.
