Research summary
The number of species at risk across the globe is increasing, jeopardizing ecological and cultural integrity. Inclusive, interdisciplinary research with holistic perspectives is more important now than ever.
As Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Environmental Science, Dr. Jesse Popp is weaving Indigenous and western ways of knowing (an approach known as "two-eyed seeing") to advance environmental and ecological science while supporting Indigenous environmental stewardship. By investigating natural and human disturbances that affect wildlife diversity, demographics and distribution, she and her research team are emphasizing the ways in which two-eyed seeing can advance environmental and ecological science. Ultimately, their work will contribute to conservation, sustainability and the progression of the natural sciences in the spirit of reconciliation.
