Research summary

When it comes to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), universal health coverage and social protection are critical, particularly in countries that suffer from inequality and poverty. Dr. John Ataguba, Canada Research Chair in Health Economics, is developing and applying a framework and metrics that will help countries assess their progress toward universal health coverage.

Using participatory research, he and his research team are also examining how critical social sectors can drive inequalities in health and influence the ability of countries to attain universal health coverage. In addition, they are exploring the drivers of inequality related to aging in Africa. Ultimately, they hope to contribute to the design of social protection systems that will help achieve the SDGs around the world.
