Research summary

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death and disability worldwide. By reducing the formation of blood clots, antithrombotic drugs can help prevent and treat it-but they come with the risk of bleeding. Dr. Deborah Siegal, Canada Research Chair in Anticoagulant Treatment of Cardiovascular Disease, is exploring ways to make these treatments safer.

Siegal and her research team are looking for better ways to manage anticoagulants (a type of antithrombotic) after bleeding as well as during and shortly after surgery. They are also studying the role of antithrombotics in preventing ischemic stroke (when a blood clot narrows or blocks an artery leading to the brain) in cancer patients. Their research involves multidisciplinary national and international collaborations and includes patient partners.
