Research summary
There are more than 100 different types of liver disease, with causes ranging from viruses to autoimmune disease, excessive alcohol use and genetics. Developing new treatments requires a better understanding of how these diseases develop and why they persist. Dr. Sonya MacParland, Canada Research Chair in Liver Immunobiology, is looking for answers to these questions.
An emerging world leader in liver biology, she is trying to understand the cellular basis of liver disease to promote hepatic health. Through national and international collaborations, mentorships and other supports, she and her research team are working to uncover exciting new insights into how liver disease develops and progresses. Ultimately, their work will raise Canada’s profile as a world leader in liver transplantation and biology and lead to better outcomes for patients.
