Research summary
As Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Studies, Dr. Keith Carlson is working with Indigenous partners to advance Indigenous rights and justice and contribute to reconciliation. To do this, he and his research team are focusing on knowledge mobilization, knowledge translation and communication strategies.
Carlson and his team are working with the Coast Salish communities of the Pacific Coast to examine government policies prohibiting polygamy, early (unsuccessful) efforts to establish alternative expressions of settler colonialism, the abduction and exploitation of Indigenous youth, and the Coast Salish responses to three smallpox epidemics. Ultimately, their research is designed to help resolve pressing contemporary political, cultural and social concerns.
