Research summary
Climate change is leading to higher temperatures and more frequent and intense weather events that cause droughts, floods and wildfires. These impacts have consequences for communities, industries and individuals whose livelihoods depend on the health of the environment. Dr. Tristan Pearce, Canada Research Chair in Cumulative Impacts of Environmental Change, is working with communities in two regions that are experiencing rapid climate change: northern Canada and the Pacific Islands.
He and his research team are developing and refining theory and practice for linking traditional and scientific knowledge in climate change assessment; working with communities to identify pathways to mitigate and adapt to climate change and provide benefits for biodiversity; and conducting comparative analyses of case studies within and between regions to draw general conclusions and exchange practical and applied lessons. Ultimately, their research could support the design and development of new adaptation and mitigation strategies.
