Research summary

The intensive care unit (ICU) is a busy and complex environment, providing critical care to those with life-threatening illnesses. But ICU care is also resource-intensive and expensive. As Canada Research Chair in Critical Care Outcomes and Systems Evaluation, Dr. Sean Bagshaw is looking for ways to improve how we deliver critical care.

Bagshaw and his research team are identifying and characterizing health care inequities, evidence-to-care gaps, and health system inefficiencies in critical care. To do this, they are using existing health data to describe and respond to the evolving changes in the epidemiology of critically ill patients and ICU practice. Ultimately, they will use their findings to develop, test and implement clinical trials that aim to improve patient outcomes, quality of care and the efficiency of health systems.
