Research summary

2SLGBTQ+ youth make up as many as 40 per cent of youth who are homeless in North America. They face discrimination and other intersecting stigma that can have serious consequences on their health and well-being and lead to significant mental health issues.

As Canada Research Chair in 2SLGBTQ+ Youth Homelessness and Mental Health, Dr. Alex Abramovich is studying homelessness among 2SLGBTQ+ youth in Canada to improve their health and the services they receive. He and his research team are using community-based, qualitative and mixed-methods research approaches to create policies and change practices that will help prevent, reduce and hopefully end homelessness in this community. In particular, he and his team are using administrative health data to investigate transgender youth mental health in Ontario and evaluating population-based housing programs for Canadian 2SLGBTQ+ youth.
