Research summary

As a society, we are increasingly calling on entrepreneurs to solve “grand challenges”—in other words, global problems of social, economic and ecological concern. As Canada Research Chair in Social Entrepreneurship, Dr. Angelique Slade Shantz aims to better understand what hinders or facilitates the ability of entrepreneurship to meet this call.

She and her research team are focusing on two research streams. In the first, they are examining how best to support entrepreneurship’s potential to support economic transitions upward, out of poverty. In the second, they are studying people who intentionally select entrepreneurship as a route to downward economic transitions. Together, the two research streams will contribute to a deeper understanding of the role of entrepreneurship in addressing some of the world’s most urgent challenges.
