Research summary
Canada’s bridges are aging rapidly due to adverse weather conditions and increasing traffic, posing a significant threat to our growing population. Recent advances in sensing technologies enable engineers to recognize defects in bridges using instrumented vehicles. But these approaches pose challenges, such as the interactions between sensors, vehicles and bridges, the lack of guidelines for vehicle configuration, and the need for a large image database.
As Canada Research Chair in Smart and Sustainable Civil Infrastructure, Dr. Ayan Sadhu is developing smart, cost-effective technology to monitor bridges in real time. He and his research team aim to enhance bridge safety, improve commuters’ satisfaction, and lay the groundwork for eliminating bottlenecks on highways.
