Research summary
Much research has focused on understanding how and when judgments made by artificial intelligence (AI) systems are likely to be biased. Discussions have focused on how to design systems and policies to minimize the negative effects of such biases—but comparatively little attention has been paid to bringing the human side of the equation to bear on how to implement and regulate AI. We continue to lack a common framework for understanding the value of human expertise to our well-being.
As Canada Research Chair in Artificial Intelligence, Well-Being and Ethics, Dr. Madeleine Ransom is analyzing the nature of human expertise and bias. This analysis will enable Ransom and her research team to develop a common framework for human and machine bias. It will also deepen our understanding of the role of expertise in well-being and how this should shape our relationship to work. Ultimately, their research will contribute to public policy on human-AI integration.
