Research summary

Climate change is affecting nearly every aspect of the Earth’s system. Avoiding—and adapting to—its most severe impacts is one of the greatest challenges facing the world today. Understanding how best to prepare for climate change impacts is a priority for earth system scientists.

As Canada Research Chair in Global Geospatial Intelligence for Earth Systems Modelling, Dr. Jed Kaplan is bringing together individuals from a range of domains to tackle research questions that can only be addressed from an interdisciplinary standpoint. He and his research team are studying the relationships between wildfire, insect pathogens and changes in vegetation cover, looking at prospects for the long-term sequestration of carbon in Canada’s forests, and exploring how the decisions we make about land use affect air quality, regional climate and public health. Their work will lead to new strategies for mitigating and adapting to the effects of climate change.
