Research summary
The global knowledge economy is built on consumption and production driven by knowledge-intensive activities. Innovation in this space is shaped by a multi-layered network of legal rules, economic policies, and socio-cultural norms surrounding intellectual property rights. A key question is: how can the intellectual property system promote innovation while also sharing its benefits more equitably?
As Canada Research Chair in Innovation and Intellectual Property Law, Dr. Jeremy de Beer is exploring how to do this. He and his research team are working to improve the global system of rules, policies, practices and norms—reflected in intellectual property—that govern nearly all exchanges of ideas, information, and data in today’s knowledge economy. By promoting a more inclusive intellectual property system, their research will encourage innovation and distribute the benefits within Canada and across the world.
