Research summary

Canadians in rural and northern communities face fragmented, under-resourced, and often geographically isolated health systems, making it difficult for them to remain in their homes as they age. But a host of new solutions, known as AgeTech, can help them live comfortably by complementing existing services and filling gaps in care. As Canada Research Chair in Technology Adoption for Aging, Dr. Shannon Freeman’s goal is to ensure these technologies empower Canadians in rural and northern communities to age well.

She and her research team are piloting, implementing and evaluating new and existing AgeTech solutions in rural and northern settings. Working in partnership with older adults and their care partners, care providers, health-system leaders and industry partners, they aim to ensure that research and product development support aging in place in these communities.
