Research summary

Indigenous Peoples are overrepresented in Canada’s criminal justice system, yet little is known about how wrongful convictions contribute to this crisis. As Canada Research Chair in Wrongful Convictions, Dr. Lisa Monchalin is investigating how experiences of innocence intersect with systemic injustices that disproportionately harm Indigenous individuals.

Drawing on the guidance of Elders and Knowledge Keepers, she and her research team are documenting traditional and contemporary approaches to justice and exploring how they can inform meaningful reforms. They are creating tools and training programs to help legal professionals prevent wrongful convictions, while also supporting Indigenous communities with workshops and reports that share findings in accessible ways. Their research will culminate in the creation of a hub for research, advocacy and education. By centring Indigenous knowledge and lived experience, this work aims to reduce the incidence of wrongful convictions and advance a more just and equitable legal system in Canada.
