The Royal Society of Canada recognizes Canada Research Chairs in 2017


The Royal Society of Canada (RSC) has recognized some of Canada’s most accomplished and promising minds from the Canada Research Chairs Program.

This year, RSC elected eight Canada Research Chairs to the academies of Arts, Humanities and Sciences. Election to the academies is one of the highest honours a scholar can receive in Canada. The following Chairs were selected:

  • Yoshua Bengio, Canada Research Chair in Statistical Learning Algorithms
  • Dennis Hall, Canada Research Chair in Boron Chemistry for Catalysis and Drug Discovery
  • Martine Hébert, Canada Research Chair on Interpersonal Traumas and Resilience
  • Claude La Charité, Canada Research Chair in Literary History and Printed Heritage
  • Mario Leclerc, Canada Research Chair in Electroactive and Photoactive Polymers
  • Stephen Loeb, Canada Research Chair in Supramolecular Chemistry and Functional Materials
  • Sylvain Moineau, Canada Research Chair in Bacteriophages
  • Weihua Zhuang, Canada Research Chair in Wireless Communication’s Networks

The RSC also named the following twelve Chairs to the College of New Scholars, Artists, and Scientists:

  • Joule Bergerson, Canada Research Chair in Energy Technology Assessment
  • Sarah Burch, Canada Research Chair in Sustainability Governance and Innovation
  • Anatoliy Gruzd, Canada Research Chair in Social Media Data Stewardship
  • Sara Karly Kehoe, Canada Research Chair in Atlantic Canada Communities
  • Christina Laffin, Canada Research Chair in Premodern Japanese Literature and Culture  
  • Fannie Lafontaine, Canada Research Chair in International Criminal Justice and Human Rights
  • Salaheddin Mahmud, Canada Research Chair in Pharmacoepidemiology and Vaccine Evaluation
  • Paul McNicholas, Canada Research Chair in Computational Statistics
  • Christopher Mushquash, Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Mental Health and Addiction
  • Carla Rice, Canada Research Chair in Care, Gender and Relationships
  • Nathalie Sinclair, Canada Research Chair in Tangible Mathematics Learning
  • Wei Yu, Canada Research Chair in Information Theory and Wireless Communications

Finally, the RSC is recognizing the following two Chairs with medals and awards for their outstanding achievements in research:

  • Zhongwei Chen, Canada Research Chair in Advanced Materials for Clean Energy, who is the winner of the Rutherford Memorial Medal in Chemistry; and
  • Anver Emon, Canada Research Chair in Religion, Pluralism and the Rule of Law, who won the Kitty Newman Memorial Award for his outstanding contributions as an emerging scholar in the field of philosophy.

“During the 150th anniversary celebrations of our country, we are particularly proud of these outstanding scholars, artists and scientists whose career contributions have been extraordinary.” said RSC President Maryse Lassonde in a statement announcing this year’s honourees.
