The Honourable Kirsty Duncan, minister of Science and Sport, announced new information on 285 new chair allocations and an additional research stipend for first-term Tier 2 Canada Research Chairs. These changes are a result of new funding in Budget 2018 for the Canada Research Chairs Program (CRCP).
New chairs
In Budget 2018, the Government of Canada announced $210 million over five years, as well as ongoing funding of $50 million per year, to the CRCP.
The following chart provides a summary of the planned new chairs, which will be added over the next five years:

In addition:
- new chairs may be used to help institutions reach their equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) action plan targets; and
- nominations for new chairs, as well as chairs nominated to support EDI targets, may be submitted off-cycle until October 21, 2019.
Stipend for Tier 2 Chairs
New funding from Budget 2018 will support current and new Tier 2 Chairs in their first terms with an annual research stipend of $20,000, that may help them establish their research projects.
