Developing novel multi-modal nanometrologies to visualize and characterize nanomaterials and polymeric nanocomposites.

Research relevance

This research will lead to better ways to remediate contaminated soil and water.

Research summary

Advances in nanoscience have created opportunities to design, synthesize, fabricate and manufacture new nanomaterials and polymeric nanocomposites that have applications in a wide range of fields—from the energy sector to health care to IT. As Canada Research Chair in Nano Sensing Systems, Dr. Seonghwan Kim aims to improve our understanding of these materials and their potential uses.Kim and his research team are advancing nanoscale measurements using novel scanning probes to visualize and characterize these materials non-invasively and with nano-scale spatial resolution in a variety of environments. They are also synthesizing new nanomaterials for sensing, delivering and treating or detoxifying chemicals. Ultimately, their research will provide the technical know-how, newly generated intellectual properties and well-trained manpower we need to strengthen several industrial sectors in Canada.
