Research summary

Our climate is changing at an alarming rate. This is not only creating environmental problems, but it is also creating social ones. Many human rights—such as the rights to life, health, food and an adequate standard of living—are adversely affected by climate change.

As Canada Research Chair in Human Rights and Transnational Environmental Governance, Dr. Sébastien Jodoin is exploring the synergies and tensions between human rights protection and the field of transnational environmental governance. He and his research team aim to explain the role of human rights in characterizing—and responding to—transboundary environmental risks and harms. They are also providing the first systematic assessment of whether and how non-governmental certification programs relating to environmental issues address human rights. Finally, they are producing case studies that illustrate how human rights norms and arguments contribute to climate litigation efforts around the world.
