Research summary

Macroeconomic policies refer to the strategies and tools that governments and central banks use to manage an economy’s overall performance. These policies are designed to achieve specific goals, such as stable prices, low unemployment and sustainable growth. As Canada Research Chair in Macroeconomics, Dr. Isabelle Salle aims to measure and improve the public’s understanding of macroeconomic policies.

She and her research team are assessing the strengths and limitations of two state-of-the-art experimental methods—in laboratory environments and in large-scale population surveys—as they pertain to validating targeted and inclusive communication tools. They will present the outcomes of their research as a set of policy recommendations meant to improve communication between policy-makers and the public. By making the underlying mechanisms of macroeconomic policies more transparent, Salle and her team will not only help people form expectations—an essential component of policy effectiveness—but will contribute to improving trust in public information.
