Research summary

Medical imaging plays a critical role in diagnosing, monitoring and treating common illnesses, such as cancer, dementia and kidney disease. Analyzing medical images manually is subjective and time-consuming—but artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms can be used to measure quantitative biomarkers from medical images in order to improve both accuracy and turnaround times.

Dr. April Khademi, Canada Research Chair in AI for Medical Imaging, is developing AI tools for multicentre medical images in order to improve workflows in radiology and pathology. She and her research team are also enhancing diagnostic accuracy and medical imaging turnaround times for common cancers and neurological illnesses. Ultimately, their research could contribute significantly to the health of Canadians.
