Equity Recognition Process

In November 2011, the Canada Research Chairs Program launched an annual process to recognize universities for exemplary practices in recruiting, nominating and/or appointing Canada Research Chairs and for meeting their equity targets for representation from the four designated groups among chairholders.

Every three years, universities are asked to set their institutional targets for representation from the designated groups. At the same time, they are invited to apply to be recognized as an institution with exemplary equity and diversity practices.

The Advisory Committee on Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Policy reviews the applications submitted and provides a recommendation to the program as to which institution should be recognized. Selection criteria include whether the institution has met or is making progress in meeting its institutional targets; the quality and relevance of strategies developed by the institution as a means to achieving or improving its equity and diversity targets for representation from the four designated groups among chairholders; and evidence of the effectiveness and impact of these strategies.
