Research summary

Mining projects should be designed with closure and reclamation in mind to reduce their associated environmental impacts. But there is often little interaction between those who work in mine planning and environmental management. As a result, many mining projects are not designed to improve how mine waste is managed.

As Canada Research Chair in Integration of Environment in the Mine Life Cycle, Dr. Isabelle Demers is trying to integrate environmental decisions into the life cycles of mines. She and her research team are developing tools to ensure mine waste management is considered at all stages—from exploration to operations to post-closure.
