Research summary

Freshwater environments are vital to Canadians, serving as resources for drinking water, recreation, fisheries and transportation. But the health of many Canadian lakes is under increasing threat. As Canada Research Chair in Aquatic Environments and Water Quality, Dr. Dermot Antoniades is studying aquatic ecosystems to understand how human-caused activities and processes, such as those associated with climate change, affect them.

He and his research team are reconstructing past conditions within lakes to better understand more recent changes. Ultimately, they hope their findings will increase public awareness, inform policy-makers, and support sound decision-making about how to manage our freshwater resources.
